Credit with Chris – Q&A #6 – My father and I have the same name. Is that a problem when it comes to credit?

Question:  My father and I have the same name.  Is that a problem when it comes to credit?

Answer:  Absolutely.  It is critical that both of you always apply for credit with the correct identification (example, Sr., Jr., etc.).  It is common for credit profiles to be merged, which then becomes an identity error.  In this case you will need to dispute with the credit bureaus to have it resolved.  This is very common and if both profiles have good credit it’s not such a bad thing, but if not, it can be a nightmare!

Yes similar names could cause a problem with credit especially if one of the parties has negative information being reported and it is accidently merged to the other party. It is critical that you both use your full legal names when applying for credit to avoid errors. Now, if both of you have good credit then this may not be such a problem!!
